Marine Learning Institute
Learning is Forever

Hi! I am Richard Wooten, President of the Marine Learning Institute. The Institute is a non-stock, tax-exempt corporation, qualified as a public charity under Section 501 (C) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It was incorporated in Virginia in 1980.

Our overriding goal is the protection of ground water for the sake of future generations. To achieve that goal, we provide educational opportunities to our youth on protecting the environment and the ground water.

Who We Are and What Our Purpose Is:

Marine Learning Institute supports Environmental Education Programs that builds awareness in our youth, who are the Care Takers of Tomorrow.

Marine Learning Institute's educational focus and mission are threefold:
  1. to accept qualified conservation contributions and to protect all qualified real property interests in perpetuity, exclusively for conservation purposes

  2. to conduct research and studies involving seas, rivers, lakes, streams, watershed and water tables; and

  3. to promote an increased awareness, appreciation and understanding of the natural resources of our continent.

Since learning is forever, we focus on educational programs for the younger generation. We have been supporting ground water protection curriculum programs since 1980. Marine Learning Institute's purpose has been and will continue to be environmental issues that reflect on the communities in which we live. We support Environmental Education Programs that build awareness, appreciation and understanding in our youth.

A Brief History

Ground water education began on the Chesapeake Bay with the SAV (Submerged Aquatic Vegetation) program in 1980. A water education and replanting program that involved the youth of the community.

Since that beginning, we moved on to:
  • Restoring a contaminated Industrial site in the mid-west. That site was changed over to a productive place of employment. Our methods of working with the state and federal agencies for methods of clean-up were applauded by the EPA and a real win for the community.

  • Supporting Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) by assisting their network of sponsoring agencies and water education professionals to deliver professional development in water education to teachers across the nation.

  • Promoting the U.S. Geological Survey's Water Resource Education Poster Program to teachers and educators across the country. Marine Learning Institute has provided funding to reprint 50,000 posters.
  • Bringing resources together to insure the needed support and to bring about Outdoor Classrooms as a reality for hands-on ground water education. Our Youth are the Care Takers of Our Tomorrows.

  • Protecting our community water sources where we live!
